I think I'll put out a mix tape every two to three weeks. I've kept the playlist player going because the page loads so much faster than having multiple videos pop up. So enjoy the goodbye to summer mixtape. Once again, the same rules apply...'cause that's how we roll, suckas!


Bloc Party -This Modern Love
Out of the bands I've run across in the last year, Bloc Party is probably my favorite. I love their unique sound and this song in particular just sweeps me away with the guitars. My love for this song was cemented when they played it in the background of the final scene of last season's "How I Met Your Mother" which is a PAJ favorite.

Jibbs - Chain Hang Low
Sing along with me now to the tune of "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" Do your chain hang low?/Do it wobble to the flow?/Do it shine in the light?/Is it platinum? Is it gold?/Do you throw it over your shoulder?/ If ya hot it make ya cold?/ Do your chain hang low?
The jam of the moment and EVERYTHING I hate about modern hip-hop, but I can't get that tune out of my head!!! Now thanks to me you won't be able to either, SUCKAS!

Beyonce and Jay-Z -Bonnie and Clyde
Aight I can't get enough of Beyonce after seeing her performance on the MTV VMA's. So this is my favorite Beyonce song, which gets much play on the iPod. I had never actually seen the video before. Lt. Daniels from The Wire plays the black cop in this video and it makes me so anxious for the new season of The Wire to start. Anyway, this song is the perfect Hova and B duet. Much better than Deja Vu which I can't listen to all the way through.

Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbedder (acoustic)
A slightly different guitar for this Pearl Jam classic. To add to this clip's awesomeness it was recorded live in the Yay. Just an amazing rendition.

Soul Asylum and Wyclef Jean - Gone 'til November
Volume is low on this clip, so turn it up a bit. I've been listening to a lot of Wyclef lately. This is an uneven rendition of this song. I got a kick out of seeing Minneapolis rockers mixed with urban flava, though. In a strange way it works. I miss the days when Wyclef was doing more than being Shakira's accessory. Still, it's not a bad gig watching Shakira shake dem honest hips. Word!

Jay-Z - Give It To Me
I had to double up on Jay Z this time out 'cause I've had "I'm a Hustla Baby!" stuck in my head for some unknown reason. Hopefully, this will cut that shit out. This video also makes the cut for the John Witherspoon appearance. He's on the Tortilla Chips and Milk Mt. Rushmore, for his role in "Hollywood Shuffle". As the purveyour of Winky Dinky Dog he uttered the immortal phrase "'Cause ho's gotta eat too!". He also kicked ass in Boomerang as Gerard's "coordinating" father. I know he did a ton of other stuff in his career, but those two roles were worthy of TC and M canonization.

Oasis - Wonderwall (acoustic)
When Ryan Adams released his acoustic version of Wonderwall I was thinking "what a fucking fraud!!!" Oasis had done that song unplugged years ago with Liam heckling Noel from the rafters. Bring something new to the table ass! Anyway, I really dug Oasis even though they nearly caused a rift between Steve and Stan of the Fabulous JP's. Anyway, when we roll, we roll old school mo'fos, so here's Oasis's acoustic Wonderwall.

Keane - Somewhere Only We Know (Live at Live 8)
Shut up! I really like this song! Seriously, shut the hell up! Don't you think PAJ has a sensitive side too? I can't be all 'bout "how I roll" 24/7, yo! er, I mean, I CAN! WORD! Just 'cause I like to kick the big sound piano love song doesn't mean nuthin'. Shut up!

The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away
I saw Valley Girl over the weekend and it gets better everytime I see it. This is the song in the Hollywood club when Julie and Randy get their mack on. I didn't even know there was a video for this song until a few years back. This is the best song in the movie and yes, it's better than "Melt With You" and "Johnny Are You Queer" suckas!

The Lemonheads - It's About Time
This is Evan Dando's attempt to write an autobiagraphical song if Juliana Hatfield were to write it about herself. Um...okay. If you look hard you'll see a very yummy pre-making out with her brother, Billy Bob, Brangelina, Angelina Jolie.

The Gin Blossoms - Until I Hear it From You
I heard the Gin Blossoms released a new album, which you could sample on their website. It took them ten long years but they finally were able to make an album that sounded just like New Miserable Experience. But the new album doesn't have "Hey Jealousy" on it so it sucks. By the way, if you don't like Empire Records, it's almost as bad as not seeing Snakes on a Plane...which means there will be no reprocussions at all. Haters!

Phantom Planet - California (live)
Sure this is the OC song, but it also marks when I stopped listening to Phantom Planet. "Phantom Planet is Missing" is one of my favorite albums and I still listen to it constantly. "California" marked a new direction for them and I couldn't get with it. Still it's a good live performance with Jason Schwartzman from Rushmore and Shopgirl on drums.

Big Pun - Still Not a Player
Years ago when this song was blowin' up, I remember being down with some shenanigans with one of my homeboys. I was hookin' up with an ex, on the dl from my woman, and he was sniffin around an engaged chick and we were gonna take them out on a fucked up double date. I remember his singing "Don't wanna be a playa no mo" all weekend long. Good times yo!

Snoop Dogg - Drop it Like it's Hot
Totally tangental selection. I was watching last season's The Office episode about the inappropriate e-mails and was inspired by Michael Scott's "forward it...forward it like it's hot, forward it like it's hot...old school" line. I can't wait for the new season to start.

Chamillionaire -Ridin' Dirty
The song that started the summer, yo!

YouTube MixTape Vol. 3- All About the Ladies

Okay, I got an itch to do another YouTube MixTape. Volume Three is my first theme compilation and It's all about the ladies this time. So here ya go, every song will be by a female or a female lead. I'm also trying out just using a playlist with one player embedded. Just pick the video from the sidebar. Let me know if you like that format better. Aight suckas here we go!



Oaktown .357 "Juicy Gothca Crazy"
Oh man, this brings back some really cool memories. This was jam back in the Hammertime days. I like the mix with the guys chanting the chorus better, but this is still legit. This is one of those songs that if you're not dancin or groovin to this song and actually listen to the lyrics, this song is just nasty yo! Even today it's rare that songs are so open about the poonanny. "Like a horse when I ride, he knows where I sit". Word!

The Sundays "Here's Where the Story Ends"
The Sundays were such an underrated band. I am still totally in love with Harriet Wheeler's voice. I hadn't heard this song in years before I put this compilation together and her voice is still one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. How the Cranberries blew up but not the Sundays is beyond me.

T.L.C. "Creep"
Seriously, I have an irrational affection for this song. Watching this performance , I realized how much I missed the overalls look. That needs to come back yesterday. The baggy overalls look with a backwards baseball cap and some Docs...now that's how a hottie rolls yo!

The Go-Go's "Vacation"
I had a Belinda Carlisle poster in my room in high school. This was post-Go Go's, post "Mad About You" and in her red hair phase. It was pretty much just a close up of her face and she was chewing on a cardigan sweater. I didn't even like her music all that much at the time. I swear I wish future-me could punch past-me in the face sometimes.

Ani DiFranco "Gravel"
Ani rocks. Period. If you don't agree with me, I will fight you.

Letters to Cleo "Here and Now"
An overlooked gem from my favorite period of rock music. This song embodies everything that was great about the mid 90's, the look the sound, and little girls who talk shit. Kay Hanley, ended up doing vocals for quite a few movies in the years that followed, like this one...

Josie and the Pussycats "Three Small Words"
This song was once made the example by my friends in San Fran about how I'll like anything pop-punk as long as it has a cute girl voice to it. We were watching TV and the commercial came on and they all pretty much yelled "That's a Paj song!". It was embarrassing, but true. Rachel Leigh Cook does an awesome job lip-synching here. Say what you want about the movie, but I enjoyed it! Who's my big rock star? Lately, Rosario Dawson has been in a disproportionate amount of my favorite movies. Sin City, Rent, Clerks 2, what gives?

Tanya Donnely and Juliana Hatfield "Josie and the Pussycats"
A theme within a theme. This is another one from "Saturday Morning Cartoon's Greatest Hits". Do I really need to explain why else this video is here?

Dream "This is Me" (Remix)
Okay, so this is a little bubblegum, but sometimes that's how I roll. The Peter Piper hook does it for me in this song. It just works really well and it gets rotation on my iPod...shut up! I can even tolerate Diddy jumping around and dancin for no reason.

Fiona Apple "Paper Bag"
Just an awesome singer and artist. So what if she went a little crazy a few years ago? I think I've liked her more since then.

L'Trimm "The Cars That Go Boom"
In my top five of songs that are sooo bad they're awesome. First of all you can't beat the name. I think these chicks were from Florida so the accents are fake. It's also unbelievable that this ever got on the radio, but I remember blasting it when I was in high school. A part of me still wishes that girls dressed like that, too. Someone remembered this song and it's part of one of my favorite mashups. Still the original on it's own kicks ass.

Beyonce "Check on It"
Whenever Beyonce and Jay-Z are shown together at an NBA event, Charles Barkley is sure to follow with a comment about how Jay-Z is the luckiest man in the world. Chuckster has gone as far as to say "All I wanna know is when ya see someone that pretty, how can you go to Brokeback Mountain?" Word, Chuck. Word! Anyway this song is a seriously undeniable force of bootylicious that I gotta put it on.

Fergie "London Bridge"
The jam of the moment right now. Do you think that Martika, the Kid and Ryan are sitting at home shaking their heads in disbelief on the transformation Fergie's made from her Stacey Ferguson Kids Incorporated days. Anyway, I'm over it now. She still looked her best in the "Shut Up" video, but I ain't complainin'.

Tori Amos "Silent All These Years"
One of my favorite concerts of all time. I'm not even one of those huge Tori fanatics. I was more a fan of Sandman and the Tori-inspired "Death" character fueled my admiration. This song I didn't truly "get" until I heard the version from the Rare on Air compilation. Hearing just her and the piano while cruising down the highway, I had goosebumps listening to this song.

JoJo "Leave"
Usually there is nothing I hate more than little kids singing about love. I blame this one on Degrassi marathons on The N. They kept showing this video over and over in between the episodes and I was hooked. It's a really smooth song and the "Who?" and "Why?" in the background make me smile.

Dixie Chicks "There's Your Trouble"
Guilty pleasure here. I honestly think I can only name one other Dixie Chicks song (the Earl song) but I have loved this song ever since I first heard it. I like the idea of them alot more in recent years, but I'm prolly still not gonna buy an album or anything.

The Breeders "Saints"
I had to put a Kim Deal song on here just because she is the indie rock goddess. I thought about Gigantic, Cannonball, and Divine Hammer, but I settled on Saints. This is a song where you had to be there to remember. I played the hell out of the Last Splash album and this is another song that helps define the era for me.

Tegan and Sara "Where Does the Good Go"
I like the song, but I really love the clip with the acoustic guitars and the patter. They are just amazingly talented and I really hope they blow up. This particular song was the closing song of a Grey's episode, which reminds me that I'm gonna have to start recapping that show in a few weeks.

J.J. Fad "Supersonic"
This song used to be in the Paj dating test. For real, yo! If the girl could finish the "S, is for Super!" portion of the song, then she was good to go. Well, the two that passed weren't the greatest of experiences, so that portion of the test was phased out. This song is the third of the hip-hop girl group one hit wonders and it's the best of the three. It might make my top ten all-time. Seriously I dig this that much. For the suspicious minds out there who are now starting to realize that I did this whole mix tape as an excuse to have this, Juicy, and Cars That Go Boom on my blog. I only gots one thing to say...shhhhhhhhh.

Gretchen Wilson "Redneck Woman"
I was in Nashville for a wedding and in our downtime we went around the town a bit. It just coincidentally happened to be during the CMT/CMA festival or something? Anyway it was Countrified and Countrified for Nashville is really a spectacle. Anyway, I was just walking along the sidewalk and there is this girl singing this song. I had no idea what this song was at the time, but anyway this girl was auditioning on the sidewalk trying to get discovered and all of a sudden she starts singing this song all up in my grill. I was wearing a hoodie and just rollin' how I do and I guess I stood out as someone who would likely repress her "redneck" ways. So I played along, and shrugged, shuffled, and head titled through the song. I even got a Hell Yeah directed at me by about a dozen uppity redneck women...was quite the surreal experience.

The New Pornographers "All For Swinging You Around"
It's my favorite song by my favorite indie band of the last five or so years. This song makes me wanna jump around. I just wish this video wasn't so booty whack! I mean the slumber party chicks could at least have tried to double dutch. Come on! Still Neko Case's voice is the shit and any excuse to listen is a good one.

Olivia Newton John "Xanadu"
Okay, ignore the 80's immersion here, but Olivia Newton John was the first crush. I've seen Grease and Xanadu almost as many times as I've seen the Warriors. I'm pretty sure the Warriors didn't claim the #1 spot until college. This is just an awesome piece of video. It has ONJ, Gene Kelley, Swan from the Warriors, and Ozone from Breakin'. It's been years since I've seen the entire movie, but I'm definitely tracking this DVD down suckas! You haven't heard the last of Xanadu on Tortilla Chips and Milk.

YouTube Mix Tape Vol. 2

Okay this is actually one of my favorite features to do, because 1) I get to put alot of great stuff for me to listen to all in one place and 2) I always get to discover new things every time I delve into youtube.

I figure I'll do these every month or so from now on. This one's got a definite early 90's flavor to it. I guess I was just in that kind of mood. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Once again all shoutouts are intentional.

Geto Boys -Mind Playin' Tricks on Me
Now you might remember that the Geto's "Let a Ho be a Ho" was the first ever "Song You Should Know". As much as they could get raw and vulgar and downright nasty, this song solidified their status as legit artists back in the day. It really captures a reflective mood on some fucked up subjects.


Sonic Youth - Bull in the Heather
Captures a totally different mood...that's all I'm gonna say. Kathleen Hannah from Bikini Kill is the girl jumping around in the vid. She was totally my type of woman back in the day, cute, cheeky, but just as likely to slit your jugular vein if you crossed her...fine maybe it still is my type of woman...haters!


Cypress Hill- How I could Just Kill a Man
Speaking of slicing jugulars...I loved this song so much I had a Cypress Hill sticker on the original PAJ Roller..and yes, before I get busted by old friends I also had a House of Pain and a Cure sticker as well. I'm never gonna be able to get away with anything on this blog.


Fugazi - Waiting Room
I really really really hate how the term "Emo" has evolved into what it is now. The term orginated to describe a set of Fugazi-inspired bands and has evolved into something synonymous with 90's goth...a term I also hated. Sit back and let the hate just build suckas...mmmm juicy hate!


N.W.A. - 100 Miles and Runnin'
The perfect song to play when drivin' and runnin from five-oh or I guess as the kids these days call it, the Po-Po. I can't really call it TRUE N.W.A. since this was post Ice Cube, but MC Ren shines here and Eazy E hit cleanup better than any MC who ever lived. Note the Warriors inspired spot in the middle of the song. Just a true hip-hop classic


Violent Femmes - Add it Up (Live)
They were the "gateway" band for me, which led me away from Huey Lewis and the News and the Outfield. My favorite Femmes song...you might remeber Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites covering this song before he gets punked by Winona Ryder. Awesome version here.


Spinal Tap - Listen to the Flower People
Great movie that I need to revisit. Harry Scherer has me on the floor during this clip.


Wyclef Jean- Perfect Gentlemen
I was in Vegas last week, and had one of those nights where we exited the strip club to sunlight. We also got the complimentary party bus ride back to the hotel. I can't get this song out of my head now. "I called up my Mamma said I'm in love with a stripper, yo!"


The Moldy Peaches feat.Chris Barron- Two Princes
This is such a fun clip. It was one of those hidden gems of youtube. I was looking for the Peaches "Downloading Porn with Dave-O" but instead found this. Anyone who lived through the Spin Doctors should pardon Chris Barron for past sins for this particular version...and yes, I've actually seen the Spin Doctors live...twice.


L.L. Cool J - I'm That Type of Guy
So many great cocky lines lines here. L.L. showes his true awesome colors here. I always like to imagine that this is the song L.L.'s girls hear a week after "I Need Love"


They Might Be Giants -Don't Let's Start
One band I must see live, but haven't yet. One of my all time favorite songs.


XTC- Senses Working Overtime
Mandy Moore covered this song sorta recently. I wanted to stab her in th jaw. This was the song playing the first night I dicovered Indie 103 on a drive to LAX. This was tonight's upload to youtube and PAJ's way of giving back.

The YouTube Mix Tape

Okay, so the whole Yacht Rock cancellation has me bummed out a bit. Inspired by Bill Simmon's YouTube Hall of Fame article, I'm going to cheer myself up a bit by diving into the YouTubeiverse and make a little mix. Now, back in the day, before CD burners and later MP3's and handheld players, mix tapes were a passion of mine. I was always on a quest to make the "Perfect Mix" and, without getting all John Cusack-y from Hi- Fidelity I was pretty damn good at it. A Paj Mix Tape, sometimes complete with liner notes was a big gun in my arsenal and I relied on it quite a bit...and yes, before you say anything...I was one of those cheeseballs.

Now, I'm making this specifically for ME not any of you...but if you think that I'm giving you a shout out, then I am...remember, everything I do is intentional.
Here we go:


Modest Mouse- "Positive/Negative" -Live

I absolutely love this band. I got latched on to them early and followed them through guest spots on the OC, Saturday Nite Live, and the ultimate in knowing that you've made it ... a version of their song on a volume of Kidz Bop. This particular song is so manic and uneven and just crashes. It's sums up how I feel...a lot. It's probably my favorite Modest Mouse song.



Lemonheads-"Great Big No"

Ten years later and I still don't understand my fascination with this band. I think part of it is that Evan Dando is very spacey, goofy, guy but honest with his songwriting , which I can really relate with. I'm a veteran of five Lemonheads/Evan Dando performances and I wouldn't hesitate to see him again. Plus, the Lemonheads scream Boston to me and associating places with music is a big thing personally and a constant theme here.


Eric B. and Rakim- "Eric B. is President" Live on Yo! MTV raps.

This is the hip-hop that hooked me and this is the reason why I love this genre. This is hip-hop at it's purest. Two turntables and a microphone. No women, no bling, no Cristal, no bullshit. Rakim flows like no other and the fact that he's still a sought after addition for modern day hip-hop records 20 years later is just a testament to his skill.


Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick- "La Di Da Di" Live

These two were the second act in the greatest concert I ever attended. It was the "Pioneers of Hip-Hop" show on the Sunset Strip in the House of Blues. The bill featured EPMD, Doug E. Fresh, and Run DMC It was a hot ticket and I lucked out getting in. It was an intimate show with a high-profile feel to it. Lots of celebs in attendance. Ed Lover emceed the show and Funkmaster Flex DJ'd during the downtime. It was my first taste of why there is no other place in the world like L.A. and I've been hooked on Cali and what it can bring ever since. Much like the clip, everyone at that show was rapping along too.


Mighty Mighty Bosstones - "Where Did You Go?"

This is also a reminder of an excellent show. The Bosstones played four sold out shows in San Fran. I took my "Watts" to see this show and we had an incredible time. They were the most fun band I've ever seen live. After seeing this show, my on again off again dream of being a Hype Man for a ska band came back, but then it faded like it always does, only to be replaced my my other dream of living above a White Casle and having endless burgers sent up to me by dumbwaiter.


Teagan and Sara -"Speak Slow"

I've really been into them since I heard "Walking with a Ghost" and I make it a point to try to fit one of their songs into my morning commute. Their inclusion in several Grey's Anatomy epsiodes makes me like the show more than I should. I think I've narrowed down that what I'm looking for in a woman (at this moment anyway) is an embodiment of their music, but add 5 to 10 years to it because I didn't realize they were so flippin' young...


Nirvana - "Drain You"

Known back in the day as "NUMBER 8!!!" which was it's track number on Nevermind. I look back at college and I'm so glad that this embodied the era of when I was in school. I can't imagine it any other way. This particular Nirvana song is also special to me because my whippedness was once called out to this song, lets just say I made a mental note at that moment that it would never happen again.


"Bastards of the Young" - The Replacements

This is a band that makes me wish I was older. I missed their peak by a few years and had to play catch up with their music. This is another band that gets associated with a a particular city. When I visited their hometown of Minneapolis, their music was the mental soundtrack of trip, everywhere I went I had the Replacements in my head. I thought it would be Prince, but sadly I never made my way to Lake Minnetonka. Anyway, their statement is so anti-video here that I can't help but dig it.


"What I've Got" - Sublime

This song was poplular when I first got to Cali and San Francisco. Just hearing this song brings back memories of walking through the 'Loin and Union Square for the first time and later of riding shotgun in a Miata cruising through the Marina and parking for crepes or frozen yogurt.


Daddy Yankee "Rompe -Remix"

Because I can't...escape...this...goddamn...song... na na na na na na na na na na na na na...it's taunting me...must...kill


"Me and Bobby McGhee"- Waylon Jennings

It's not the most famous version of this song, that would be Janis Joplin's. Nor is it my favorite version...that would go to the Fabulous JP's cover. The Fabs would use this song to close out their earliest shows. Stan would always give an awkward closing ad-libbed shout out to the crowd, while Steve would do the na na na parts. It wasn't pretty but it certainly had it's charm.


"Laffy Taffy" - D4L

This song embodies paradox. It's everything I hate in present day hip hop, but the very fact that this song not only made it on the radio but became a huge hit is too rich an irony to ignore. How many songs sond like their being rapped over nintendo beats? Throw in the ESPN bumper done acapella and you have magic!


Hall and Oates - "Private Eyes"

Okay now everybody ready to do a jumping sidekick with me? One, Two, Threee "Halll and Oaaaaates"
